Launch of SYNERG-ID: Bringing together public and private resources to leverage infectious disease data

Faced with the fragmentation of epidemiological data in France, SYNERG-ID brings together public and private stakeholders for the first time around a common goal: to develop, in close collaboration with the Health Data Platform, a national platform dedicated to infectious diseases to inform public decision-making.

A major challenge: interconnecting and leveraging our data

French epidemiological data is currently scattered across multiple systems, limiting its use and value. This fragmentation hinders the ability of health authorities to make informed and rapid decisions. Faced with this shared observation, a collective response is needed to create an infrastructure that will interconnect and leverage this wealth of data for the benefit of public health.

An unprecedented collective dynamic

SYNERG-ID is a consortium that brings together institutional and industrial partners around a mission of public interest. In direct response to these challenges, the association will develop a platform designed to enable the reuse and exploitation of multi-source data, including virological, clinical, epidemiological, social, behavioural, economic and environmental data, to improve epidemiological surveillance, prevention and patient care.

The association is supported by:

• Institutional founding members: a scientific committee of infectious disease experts covering all topics (methodology, virology, infectious diseases, paediatrics, geriatrics, modelling) with Elisabeth Botelho-Nevers, André Cabié, Fabrice Carrat, Simon Cauchemez, Carole Eldin, Slim Fourati, Gaëtan Gavazzi, Xavier de Lamballerie, Paul Loubet, Anne Mosnier, Hortense Petat, Astrid Vabret, Laurence Watier;
• Industrial founding members: AstraZeneca, Moderna, Sanofi, Seqirus, Valneva and Softway Medical / Epiconcept (DPI player);
• Operational founding members: Nicolas Grélaud (OpenHealth), Ludovic Lamarsalle (Healstra), Magali Lemaitre (HDE), Martin Prodel (DALI) in charge of coordinating this ecosystem and steering the development of the platform;
• ANRS Emerging Infectious Diseases (ANRS MIE) and the Health Data Platform, active members of the association;
• and Brigitte Autran, former President of COVARS (2022-2024), who will serve as interim president of the association.

The project also benefits from the support of the Grenoble Computer Science Laboratory and Atlanpôle Biothérapies.

A platform to interconnect and inform

SYNERG-ID will develop a sovereign infrastructure that will interconnect currently siloed data sources, enabling an integrated approach to infectious diseases, from pathogen surveillance to patient pathway analysis.

It will provide up-to-date, regionalised data to inform prevention strategies, vaccination recommendations and resource allocation. It will offer interactive dashboards and advanced analysis tools (Python, R, AI) and will strengthen crisis preparedness through real-time surveillance and predictive modelling. In close collaboration with the Health Data Hub, this data can be matched with medical and administrative data from the SNDS’s main database.

An open ecosystem, a collective ambition

The result of two years of consultation, SYNERG–ID embodies a collaborative dynamic bringing together public and private actors specialising in infectious diseases in the service of health data. Open to all actors and with a budget of €4 million over four years, this consortium aims to transform the use of data on infectious diseases and strengthen our collective capacity for surveillance and anticipation.
