Launch of the France–Brazil International Research Platform in Global Health (PRISME)

In order to strengthen scientific collaboration, France and Brazil announce the launch of the France–Brazil International Research Platform in Global Health (PRISME France–Brazil), an international consortium bringing together several key stakeholders from both countries. The result of over twenty years of close scientific and technical cooperation between France and Brazil in the field of health, this initiative brings together researchers, clinicians, decision-makers and representatives of civil society. It is now entering a new phase with the signing of PRISME, which will be officially launched on 1–3 October 2025 in Fortaleza, during the 31st France–Brazil Scientific and Technical Cooperation Seminar and the 9th Scientific Day of the ANRS MIE partner site in Brazil. Labelled France-Brazil Season 2025, these events are supported by the authorities of both countries under the banner of innovation and scientific cooperation.

A new stage in Franco-Brazilian collaboration

In 2025, Franco-Brazilian collaboration reaches a new level with the launch of the PRISME France–Brazil initiative (International Research Platform in Global Health), bringing together several French and Brazilian institutions (see partners in the paragraph below). This innovative model, co-developed by ANRS MIE and its French and international partners, aims to move beyond the logic of bilateral collaborations towards a more federative approach by bringing together French and Brazilian institutions already engaged in the field within a single alliance.

The PRISME France-Brazil initiative is unique in that it promotes operational and scientific collaboration across our shared border between French Guiana and the state of Amapá in Brazil. This geographical continuity provides a unique opportunity to extend existing partnerships and strengthen their impact on public health policies at the regional and international levels.

By bringing together existing networks, PRISME aims to optimise collaborations, give them greater international visibility and strengthen their impact on public health policies and programmes.

Research for global health

The main missions of the France-Brazil PRISME initiative are to support research and training through active scientific coordination, joint projects and skills development initiatives. They also aim to develop solutions that are directly applicable to the health of Brazilian and French populations, to promote new collaborations on topics of common interest, and to support institutions and researchers in strengthening their capacities and accessing funding.

Building on work to combat HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis and tuberculosis, PRISME France-Brazil aims to address current health challenges, marked by the emergence or re-emergence of infectious agents and recurrent epidemics linked to the consequences of climate change.

The platform adopts an integrated and interdisciplinary approach, with a “One Health” perspective, in order to transform research into concrete actions for public health.

A network of excellence to collectively respond to global health challenges

PRISME France–Brazil will bring together a network of leading French and Brazilian institutions within a single alliance to strengthen scientific cooperation in global health.

On the Brazilian side, the Ministry of Health (MS), the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) and the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) play a central role in defining national health research priorities and supporting research.
On the French side, the National Institute of Health and Biomedical Research (Inserm) and its autonomous agency, the ANRS Emerging infectious diseases (ANRS MIE), the Pasteur Institute (IP), the Pasteur Institute of French Guiana (IP Guyane), the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and the French Embassy in Brazil contribute their scientific, technical and diplomatic expertise.

With PRISME France–Brazil, scientific cooperation between our two countries is taking a decisive step forward: it is becoming a strategic lever for collectively responding to major global health threats and affirming a common ambition, that of placing health at the heart of the future.

The French Embassy in Brazil has been based in Brasilia since 1975. It is France’s diplomatic representation in Brazil. This year, we are celebrating 200 years of diplomatic relations between France and Brazil.

ANRS Emerging Infectious Diseases (MIE), an autonomous agency of Inserm, leads, evaluates, coordinates and funds research on HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. It prepares the scientific response to the challenges posed by these diseases.

Created in 1964, Inserm is a public scientific and technological institution under the dual supervision of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Research. As an international research institute, IRD helps strengthen societies’ resilience in the face of global upheavals. It is present in more than 50 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific, as well as in France’s overseas territories.
