Coordinated Action on Viral Hepatitis Basic and Translational Research (CA42)

This Coordinated Action drives basic and translational research in the field of viral hepatitis. It explores new areas of interest, establishes future directions and supports researchers in the maturation of their projects.

In brief

This Coordinated Action focuses on basic and translational research in the field of viral hepatitis, which remains a major public health problem.

Its objectives are to:

  • Study the fundamental molecular and cellular aspects of the life cycles of the hepatitis viruses, host responses and diseases induced by these viruses
  • Provide ANRS MIE with new concepts and directions for prevention and therapy

Activities

This Coordinated Action operates through the activities of its three workgroups (Virus-Cell Interactions, Immunology, and Pathogenesis) which meet regularly and through the annual national hepatitis network meeting .

The ‘Virus-Cell Interactions’ workgroup brings together researchers who focus on basic-research projects in the field of viral heptitis, aiming to characterise the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlies virus-host interactions throughout the different steps of the virus replication cycle, the role of these mechanisms in viral pathogenesis, and the design of new antiviral strategies.

The ‘Immunology’ workgroup aims to understand the organisation and regulation of immune responses. After a viral infection, immune responses are crucial for establishing viral control or progression to chronicity and pathology.

The ‘Pathogenesis’ workgroup focuses on post-antiviral treatment follow-up and the role of co-morbidities in the progression of liver disease. Its objective is restructure and improve integration of the ongoing actions devoted to the post-treatment follow-up of patients:

  • whose HCV infection is cured
  • whose HBV infection is controlled
  • whose treatment has failed (HCV, HBV and HDV)

and on viral hepatitis-related morbidity and mortality reduction in the North and South, including in HIV-coinfected patients.

The National Hepatitis Network Days bring together researchers and physicians to discuss the latest French advances in basic and translational research.
