Loss to follow-up in the care of HIV-infected subjects. Cross-population analysis including the ANRS CO6 PRIMO, ANRS CO9 COPANA and ANRS CO21 CODEX cohorts with the ANRS CO4 FHDH hospital database

Published on 27 May 2024

Study rationale

The loss to follow-up in the care of HIV-infected patients has major individual and public health implications. The data currently published on this subject in European countries are very limited.

Making sure that people living with HIV continue to receive regular, uninterrupted treatment is a major challenge if we are to ensure that there is no break in antiretroviral treatment and no resumption of viral replication, thereby improving individual health and reducing the risk of transmission. Understanding the factors associated with the loss to follow-up in care is vital if we are to identify most-at-risk populations.

This longitudinal study will shed new light on this topic, providing data to study virological, clinical and immunological trends, particularly in the long term, and take into account factors such as socio-economic status. This will help us to adapt our interventions and develop our care in the future.

Main objectives

  1. Factors associated with loss to follow-up in short, medium and long-term of HIV care among people in the ANRS CO6 PRIMO, ANRS CO9 COPANA and ANRS CO21 CODEX cohorts, in particular socio-economic factors and living conditions, which have been little studied until now
  2. Changes in virological control throughout the follow-up period, represented by the proportion of person-months with loss of virological control (i.e. a detectable viral load) in the short, medium and long term after initiation of treatment; associated factors, taking into account socio-economic factors, irregular follow-up or not in care
  3. Clinical and immuno-virological status of the subjects at the last follow-up, in the long term after initiation of treatment; associated factors (including ocio-economic factors) with irregular follow-up or lack of follow-up
