Appointed by the Minister of National Education, Higher Education and Research, and the Minister of Labor, Health, Solidarity and Families, on the proposal of Professor Didier Samuel, Chairman and CEO of Inserm, Professor Yazdan Yazdanpanah has been reappointed as Director of ANRS Emerging infectious diseases for a new four-year term.
Yazdan Yazdanpanah has been leading ANRS Emerging infectious diseases (ANRS MIE) since the agency was established as an autonomous entity within Inserm in January 2021. This creation, resulting from the merger of ANRS (the National Agency for Research on AIDS and Viral Hepatitis) and Inserm’s REACTing consortium, was driven by the government’s aim, in the context of the health crisis, to better coordinate France’s response to pandemic risks. The mission of ANRS—to coordinate, fund, and promote research on HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, and tuberculosis—was thus expanded to include emerging infectious diseases.
Under Yazdan Yazdanpanah’s leadership, ANRS MIE has taken over the scientific organization, operational capacities, and all research efforts supported by ANRS since 1988. The new agency, with the help and support of its institutional, academic, hospital, and civil society partners, has also worked to define and implement a research-based preparedness and response framework for epidemic risks and health crises. To this end, it has notably strengthened its international and European engagement.
I am pleased and honored to have been appointed to continue leading ANRS Emerging infectious diseases, which plays a significant role in France and internationally in infectious disease research and crisis preparedness, within Inserm and in collaboration with all institutions. I would like to warmly thank all the teams for their commitment and expertise, which are at the heart of our progress. Deeply committed to the quality of our scientific research in all its aspects, and convinced that it is essential to improving human health, I am determined to foster innovation, excellence, and fruitful coordination among all stakeholders, particularly the new generations of researchers who are dedicating themselves to the challenges we face.
University professor and hospital practitioner since 2006, Yazdan Yazdanpanah is an internationally recognized specialist in infectious diseases. He has been a professor of medicine at Université Paris Cité and head of the infectious and tropical diseases department at Bichat-Claude-Bernard Hospital (AP-HP) since 2012. He has also served as director of Inserm’s Thematic Institute for Immunology, Inflammation, Infectious Diseases, and Microbiology (IT I3M) since 2017.
This autonomous agency within Inserm is tasked with facilitating, evaluating, coordinating, and funding research on HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, and emerging infectious diseases.
