Better preparing Europe for future health threats: the first joint transnational call from BE READY

Infectious diseases can quickly turn into global health crises, as demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic and recent outbreaks of avian influenza (H5N1) and mpox virus. These events have highlighted the importance of interactions between the environment, humans and animals in a “One Health” approach, and have also underscored the need to strengthen international cooperation in research and development. However, in Europe, it has become apparent that, despite rapid research efforts, these have lacked coordination, resulting in a fragmented research landscape.

The European Partnership for Pandemic Preparedness BE READY aims to establish a European research and innovation ecosystem ready to respond quickly and effectively to future health crises caused by infectious diseases. This ecosystem will be fully integrated into the broader European institutional framework for health security.

To achieve this objective, BE READY’s Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) on pandemic preparedness defines the Partnership’s research priorities and scientific objectives. To implement these priorities, BE READY is launching its first joint transnational call (JTC) in 2026.

This call will support innovative, collaborative, interdisciplinary and transnational research projects aimed at better understanding the pandemic potential of emerging pathogens, determining the pathophysiology induced by these pathogens and developing innovative medical countermeasures.

The call for proposals is scheduled to be launched in January 2026.

Further details regarding the scope, the final list of participating funders and the eligibility rules will be provided shortly in the call text.
